Chapter Sixteen

Olivia

“Submit it.”

“Yeah?”

“Yep. I’m happy. Upload it now and I’ll let Harry know.”

“Awesome.” Justin turned back to the screen and started tapping away. “This is good. It’s really good. You should be proud.”

Leaning forward, I prodded his side. “We both should be proud, you’re just as much a part of it as I am.”

Justin shook his head. “Nah, this is your doing.” He looked over his shoulder at me and grinned. “I’m happy to share the credit if you want to tell Harry that though.”

I rolled my eyes. “Don’t sell yourself short. This was a team effort.” Leaning back in my chair I ran my hands along the armrest, watching him in silence for a few seconds. “It really is good though, isn’t it?”

He nodded. “Yeah. It’s great.”

Satisfaction at what we had achieved filled me as I watched the footage play on Justin’s screen. After weeks and weeks of long hours, sleepless nights and deliberating over every single thing that made the edit versus landing on the cutting room floor, it was finally done. I had produced my very first documentary—or at least the first one I was paid to do. By now I was pretty sure I could recall every single line of the story word for word, but that didn’t matter. I was no less in awe of it than I was that first day Justin and I sat down in the studio and watched every piece of footage we’d captured. Twenty-seven hours of footage cut down to thirty minutes of storytelling.

“Hey, you want to go out and celebrate tonight?”

Justin nodded without taking his eyes off the screen. “I’ve got a date, but I could grab a couple of drinks beforehand.”

“Okay, great.”

The footage paused, buffering for a few seconds on a shot of Nate that I loved. His hand was midway through rubbing across his jaw, his eyes dark as he contemplated my question. His next words were, “Winning is a state of mind. It’s more than physical, it’s who you are when you step out onto the field. If winning isn’t every single thing to you, then you may as well not show up at all.”

I loved those lines. In fact, I knew when the time came, I would be hovering by the editors, making a nuisance of myself in the tiny studio space where they cut promo footage for the whole network, demanding that moment be used as the teaser for the documentary. It was so good. When he’d first said it, his eyes on me the whole time, I’d felt a chill go down my spine. And later, Justin had practically drooled as we’d re-run the footage.

I pulled out my phone and opened my messages to Nate, typing one word. Done! My thumb hovered over the send button for a few seconds as I wondered if I should invite him to celebrate with us.

It had been two days since I’d last seen him, when we’d met behind the administration building of the stadium like a couple of kids trying not to get caught making out.
